Employee Retention Solutions for Small Business Owners

By Tricia Gladdis

Solution for making your small business employees feel more valuable

Effective employees force can be the difference between profits and bankruptcy. Employees who feel appreciated work harder. Praising the efforts of your employees and providing gourmet coffee will definitely improve their moral at work. Unfortunately, if you want to compete with larger businesses for employees you’ll have to spend more than a few dollars for coffee. Convincing your best employees to stay might involve redirecting a frightening amount of your revenues away from business growth strategies toward worker benefits.

As a small business owner, you need a solution for competing with larger companies for employees

In order to compete with large corporations, small businesses must spend an increasingly larger portion or their revenues in order to maintain competitive benefits packages for their employees. According to the National Federation of Independent Businesses, health plan costs increased by an average of $722 per employee in 2002 alone.

Large companies with hundreds of employees can’t offer the personal nature of working for your small business. What they can offer are attractive benefits. As you may have painfully learned already, insurance premiums vary in price based on the number of policies purchased. A small business owner with only a handful of employees simply cannot afford to provide competitive insurance coverage.

Purposely remaining a small business is an increasingly common solution to retaining employees

Not surprisingly many entrepreneurs decide to limit their growth in order to avoid the hassle of maintaining employees. The paperwork involved with even the best employees can result in more work from a small business owner. Although this is not a solution for expanding, many small business owners who decide to remain small claim they are more satisfied with their work. Spending valuable time and energy chasing after employees and their paperwork simply does not appeal to many independent business owners. Remaining small also allows them stay personally involved with every aspect of their business without the hassle of recruiting, payroll and tax forms.

Remaining small is not without its problems. A solitary proprietor faces less certainty of constant income flow. There’s simply no one who can cover for you if you call in sick. There isn’t anyone to call! An extended illness could result in a complete loss of customers and income.

Staff leasing solutions for small businesses

If you want happy employees, you have to give them benefits. Benefits are expensive and limit the amount of revenue available for expanding your business. There is a simple solution to this catch 22. Lease employees from staffing firms that are large enough to provide necessary benefits to their employees. Staff leasing firms take advantage of their size to secure benefits at a bulk discount. A staffing company can provide them with benefits at a much lower price than a small business could hope to. Not only do they help you afford benefits but they also alleviate much of the headache and hassle associated with maintaining employee records and tax information.
